As spring gently arrives, the red wooden tables of the Dorothy auction hall are softly illuminated, setting the stage for a cultural dialogue spanning several millennia. The mottled textures of stone, the mellow patina of jade, and the refined blue glaze of blue-and-white porcelain resonate quietly with one another, forming an artistic narrative shaped by time.
This spring, Dorothy proudly presents four important private treasures from a single collector. From an early stone-carved auspicious beast, to jade ornaments of the Warring States and Han periods, a Han dynasty bear-shaped jade carving, and finally a Kangxi imperial blue-and-white bowl, these four works come together as carefully preserved fragments of history, awaiting a new dialogue with their future guardians.
This is more than an auction—it is a cultural journey of private collecting. Over decades, the collector has focused on craftsmanship, historical context, and cultural continuity, allowing these remarkable works to be preserved and reintroduced to the world in a complete and thoughtful manner.
Shang and Zhou Style Stone-Carved Auspicious Beast
Early Cultural Symbolism in Variegated Stone

As an opening highlight of the auction, this Shang and Zhou style stone-carved auspicious beast is crafted from rare variegated stone. Its naturally interwoven black and grey textures resemble ink washes formed by time, conveying a restrained yet powerful sense of antiquity. The beast appears crouched with its head raised, its form compact yet dynamic, while a smooth perforation on the shoulder suggests its former use as an ornament or ceremonial object.
In early cultural contexts, stone objects often served as carriers of symbolic meaning. This piece reflects the abstract aesthetic language characteristic of its period, combining a sense of strength with symbolic expression. Acquired by the collector overseas in earlier years, it boasts clear provenance and excellent preservation.
